Who Is David Beckham?
The retired professional
footballer David Beckham was born on May 2, 1975, in London, England. It was
quite obvious the moment he could first kick a soccer ball that he is an
outstandingly talented player, Beckham began his career by playing for
Manchester United, when he was just 18 years old, and started making history by
age 20. In 2007, he signed a five-year contract with the L.A. Galaxy which was
worth about $250 million. In May 2013, he announced plans to retire from his
football career.
Wife and Family
Beckham has been married to
Victoria Adams (Posh of Spice Girls fame) since 1999. The couple has four
children: one daughter (Harper) and three sons (Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz) who
all have played football in the Arsenal Academy.
World-Wide Star for
Manchester United
The talented goal scorer, David
Beckham was named the Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the
Year in 1997. After a year, he became one of the leading faces for England's
World Cup team.
His phenom and good looks
offered up plenty of off-field potentials, too. In 1998, Beckham, who'd already
signed a deal with Adidas, gained $13 million in endorsement deals. The brand
belonging to David Beckham only enhanced in value when he met Victoria Adams,
also known as "Posh Spice" of the Spice Girls, in 1997. The two
quickly fell in love, and they had their first son on March 4, 1999, they named
him Brooklyn Joseph. Two months later, Beckham and Victoria tied the knot at a
luxurious $800,000 wedding at a castle outside of Dublin, Ireland. On the field,
Beckham didn't miss his mood. In the year 1999 he led Manchester United to the
Premier League title, the FA Cup championship, and then the Champions League
title. Thanks to the winning last-minute free kick against Greece in 2001,
England qualified for the next World Cup. That same year, Beckham signed a
three-year contract to remain with Manchester United worth $22 million.
Early Years
At a very early age of his
career, Beckham kept his own promise as a footballer, winning the coveted Bobby
Charlton Soccer Schools National Skills competition at 11 years old. His talent
soon caught the notice of Manchester United team officials, who then asked him
to try out for their club's youth league. By the age of 16, Beckham left his
home and started playing for United's training division. After two years, he made it to the club, and
by the year 1995, he was a full-time starter.
Retirement
Just days after winning a title
with French club Paris Saint-Germain on May 16, 2013, the 38-year old Beckham
announced that he would be retiring at the end of the 2013 season, ending his
21-year professional football career. By 2013, Beckham had been credited as
England's wealthiest sportsman, reportedly earning more than $46 million
annually.
