A rush of people is screaming and gathering around a house, decorated with flowers and lights. The one name is echoing everywhere -Sakshi Malik, India’s first female wrestler to win an Olympic medal. A girl from Rohtak win the bronze medal in the 58 kg category in the 2016 summer Olympics at Rio de Janerio.
A daughter of bus conductor makes India proud and become a role model for many girls who see themselves in sports. Malik’s journey began at the age of 12, she always wanted to be a sportsperson, when she decided, wrestling was her first choice always. The seeds of wrestling sowed by Malik’s grandfather Shri Badlu Ram into her. Coming from a very small village, Mokhra in Rohtak (Haryana)  which is popular for their lowest  girls sex ratio and  female going in sports is still a taboo, Sakshi breaks all stereotypes and proved that a woman can fight whether on mat or off. Malik always believes that girls can outshine too, if they are given good platform and proper support .
Malik’s family members are so proud of her achievement and always supported her. In an interview she mentioned that my family played an important role in making who i am today their undying support and love has always helped me. A Rohtak wrestler follows her passion in such a society where girls are not allowed to live freely, Malik becomes a symbol of women

empowerment.  Women can be anything or do anything. The Haryanvi girl created history.
“Singing the national anthem in a stadium outside India is the proudest feeling one can ever have. Be it personal goals, milestones, achievements, everything else takes a back seat. There is nothing like winning a medal there for your country,” Sakshi Malik .
