THE DHONI ERA
Mahendra Singh Dhoni or MS Dhoni is
one of the most popular Indian cricketers. Putting his great leadership skills
to test, he served as the former captain of the Indian national cricket team however, he captained the team only in the limited-overs format. Also known for
his excellent wicket-keeping skills, he had always been a gem to the Indian
team even in some very hard situations. He made his debut in One Day
International (ODI) in December 2004, playing against Bangladesh. A year later,
he debuted in test cricket against Sri Lanka.
Opinions are divided over MS Dhoni’s
title as the greatest captain in the history of India. While he remains the
only international captain to have won all the three ICC tournaments World cup,
T-20 world cup, ICC Champions trophy, (in addition to this his team CSK also
won the IPL title three times under his captaincy) he has also been at the
receiving an end of long streaks of overseas defeats. It cannot be doubted,
however, that nobody has served as captain, wicket-keeper, and batsman over
such a long period of time in the history of the sport.
MS Dhoni the batsman had
well and truly arrived. It didn’t take long to show his leadership qualities as
well when he was handed over the responsibility of leading a whole young side
in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
This marked the beginning of a new era for India as the team went on to win the first ever T20 World Cup, the 2008 CB Series in Australia, the Border-Gavaskar trophy in 2008 and a historic Test series victory in New Zealand in 2009.
In an interview dhoni
said "I
love to go back to Ranchi. I have three dogs at home. Even after losing a
series or winning a series, they treat me the same way. Getting up quite late
in the morning, going to clean my bikes, spending some time with my family, my
parents and friends, going out for rides with my friends and having lunch or
dinner at a roadside hotel - that's my favourite time-pass"
The
god of cricket also said that “Dhoni is the best captain I have played under”.
